We are starting a new feature on our website. We will post our quarterly newsletter here for everyone to see. We have been sending these out to our mailing list, but with all the rapid progress we want everyone to see how Musa Masala is moving, grooving and making it happen with awesome projects! We will also have all the old newsletters easily accessible so you can relive the good times.

Welcome to the first Musa Masala newsletter of 2024. Have we got some news for you!

1 We debuted our newest safety card, Lost and Found, with a presentation on Preventative Search And Rescue by Jason Tartalone from Sergeant Rescue Training and Consulting. This card will help you plan and prepare for your wilderness outings. One side is prep and the other is a guide to follow if you find yourself lost. We urge you to share it with your organization and friends and to keep it in your pack; your little friend will be there if you need it.

2 We expanded our scholarship program to include Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder courses! We sent four students on a two-week course with Initiative Outdoor, a leader in wilderness education in Nepal. Now these four guides will take their new skills with them every time they work in the mountains. This makes for a better wilderness experience for everyone.

3 We have set a tentative date in the first week of June for our week-long free dental camp at the Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Hospital with Dr. Anumesh Dahal and his team. Want to see happy teeth in the Khumbu? Your chance to help is here, please help make a difference.

4 Our Lead Climbing Competition in November has sown some seeds, and boy are they sprouting! Already in 2024 there were three competitions in Kathmandu. Two were held at the Crimpanzee Climbing Hub: The Tenzing Norgay Memorial Climbing Competition and the Late Babu Chiri Sherpa Climbing Competition. Musa Masala was a co-sponsor in these events. On March 9th Musa Masala along with our friends at Wongchhu Peak Promotion title sponsored the Open Lead Climbing Championships at Kathmandu Sport Climbing Center (KSCC). The event was an enormous success thanks to the team at KSCC. We are so excited to see the indoor climbing community having these events to inspire the climbers.

5 In celebration of the KSCC competition and as a way to bring the climbing community together Musa Masala invited everyone to a day of rock climbing at Hattiban, a crag an hour outside of Kathmandu. Wongchhu Peak Promotion did an expert job of organizing a bus, lunch, and climbing gear for everyone. It was quite a task as we had over 40 eager climbers who showed up! We climbed, talked, and sang. We were honored to have Chandra Ale of Initiative Outdoor and his son Nishon join us to share the history of the crag and teach a short program on the Leave No Trace. Stay tuned for our story and video about this event.

We believe that the indoor climbing community is an excellent educational space. We foster a spirit of competition among a group that already cares for and supports each other. We are committed to helping Nepali climbers achieve their goals while they learn important principles of safety, health, and awareness.  The most rewarding part for us is making friends with the people we meet; they often teach us much more than we impart to them.

As we wrap up this edition of our newsletter, we want to remind you of the crucial role your support plays in our initiatives. Your contributions directly empower individuals who might not otherwise get that chance. Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Jam Jam!
