Here is a look at the latest new conference on Wilderness Medicine in California. The town of Quincy, CA and Las Plumas Hospital did an amazing job welcoming everyone to this event.
The Musa team had the great opportunity to get in on the ground floor for the first wilderness medicine event sponsored by the Las Plumas Hospital. The Sierra Nevada Wilderness Medicine and Conservation Conference was held in the beautiful town of Quincy the first three days in June. We took this chance to introduce the Musa Masala world of safe mountain travel to a new group of medical professionals who get outside for work and for play. The conference was a real experience in the outdoors. Camping was the way to go for lodging and there were many activities between speakers around Quincy to keep you busy.
The opening night greeting at the beautiful West End Theater from organizers Dr. Jeff Kepple and Dr. Zina Semenovskaya ended with an awesome rendition of “What a Wonderful World” on guitar and saxophone—not your usual medical conference opener!
The speakers were excellent throughout all three days and the attendees were all into it. The spirit of the event was uplifting and everyone seemed to love the pacing and environment. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the people of Quincy who were so helpful and wonderful. The local restaurants even stayed open late to facilitate everyone’s dinner needs each day.
Another big thank you goes out to the California Highway Patrol Air Ops unit and CareFlight, who put on a great demo on their Search and Rescue procedures. Unfortunately Careflight had to leave early on a real call, but the CHP crew stayed to answer questions, many of them about how to get out of paying speeding tickets!
Musa Masala sold made for the event Musa/Conference t-shirts, prayer flags, Thankas and prints from our forthcoming book, Musa Masala: Mountain Girl of the Himalayas, to support their projects to fund the Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Hospital. We made new friends and had lots of interest in our Altitude Tips Cards and our book. A special thank you goes to Carol Shapiro, RN, who donated three Thankas that she brought back from Nepal in the 1980s to our fundraising efforts.
